Private vs. Group Paella Cooking Class in Barcelona: Which One Fits You?

Group cooking paella around the fire at Rice to Meet You's workshop in El Rava

If you've typed "private paella cooking class Barcelona" into Google, you probably have a specific picture in mind: just you, your partner, or your friends, no strangers around, the fire and the paella pan all to yourselves. That's a fair thing to want. But before booking something with that label, it's worth understanding what "private" actually means in practice, because not every workshop using the word offers the same thing.

How the class at Rice to Meet You actually works

At Carrer de la Lleialtat 16, in El Raval, we run guided group paella classes Wednesday to Sunday, with sessions at 6pm, 8pm, and 10pm. Each session brings together up to twelve people around the fire — usually a mix of couples, friends, and the occasional solo traveler who booked alone. The price is €69 per person and includes the ingredients, welcome cava, the full tasting, bread, crema catalana, and two different white wines — one during the cooking and another when you sit down to taste the paella. No previous cooking experience is needed — the process is guided step by step.

That's a shared experience, by design. You're not booking the room or the fire exclusively for your group: you're sharing a long table and stovetops with whoever else booked that time slot. For a lot of people, that's exactly what makes it work — cooking side by side with strangers breaks the ice faster than a normal dinner, and the shared table at the end, once the paella is done, is usually the part people remember.

When the shared group class is, honestly, the better option

If there are two of you, or even if you're coming alone, and what you're after is the experience of cooking paella without extra complications, the group session is the simplest and cheapest option per person. There's no minimum headcount to cover and no added cost for being a small party — you pay per person and that's it. For a weekend trip, a couple's outing, or a loose afternoon with friends, this is the format built exactly for that.

What "private" actually means here

If what you need is the space to yourselves — no sharing a table with other guests — that does exist at Rice to Meet You, but not as a scaled-down version of the €69 class. It's a different service: team building and private events, aimed at both companies and larger group celebrations.

There are three formats:

  • Team Flow: 2.5 hours, 6 to 16 people, from €70/person (€500 minimum).

  • Paella Challenge: 3 hours, 10 to 25 people, from €85/person (€800 minimum).

  • Experience Dinner: 3–3.5 hours, 6 to 16 people, from €90/person (€600 minimum).

These can run any day of the week, at a time you agree on, and can include extras like wine pairing, an open bar, a photographer, branded aprons, or corporate décor.

The honest part worth saying

Here's where it's worth being direct: if there are two of you, or a small group of three or four, looking for an exclusive class just for yourselves without paying a €500 minimum, that's not something we offer. The private formats are built for groups of at least six, and they carry a minimum spend that doesn't make sense for a couple or a small party. If that's your situation, the shared group session is still, by a clear margin, the option that makes sense — and that's not a consolation prize. Plenty of people who book the group session end up preferring exactly that dynamic, the shared part of it.

If instead you're a company organizing a team activity, or a larger group celebrating something (a hen do, a birthday, a big family gathering) and you want the space to yourselves, team building is the right path, and that's where exclusivity actually makes sense.

The short version

The real question isn't "private or group?" so much as "how many of you are there, and what are you after?" For two people or a small group without the budget for a private event, the group session in El Raval is the real option. For a work team or a celebration of six or more, the team building formats give you the exclusive space you were looking for.

To book the group session, you can do it directly from the workshop page. If you're organizing something for a larger group or a company, you can check the three formats on the team building page.
